NYC's Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia has stepped down from her position to pursue a spot as the city's next mayor.

As a member of Mayor Bill de Blasio's cabinet, she has become known around City Hall as "being the mayor’s go-to problem solver." Garcia briefly managed the New York City Housing Authority and spearheaded emergency measures to make sure millions of city residents received free meals during the pandemic. She also reorganized the private carting industry which Eddie Bautista, executive director of the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance, called the "biggest reform to sanitation policy in 15 years."

Garcia's focus, if a mayoral run is announced, is on "core basic services and how that translates into quality of life for residents," she said. Economic revival would be a large part of her platform. While Garcia has never held an elected position, her father worked under former mayor Edward I. Koch as the city's chief labor negotiator.
